El Rito-(Capsicum annuum)-The name El Rito in Spanish means “Little River”. It is a small community Northwest of Espanola, New Mexico and is at an Elevation over 6,000 feet. It is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in New Mexico and home to the oldest standing Churches in New Mexico. The El Rito chile has been passed down from farmer to farmer for many generations and has adapted well to the higher elevation and cooler climate. It has a good medium hot heat level and a smoky sweet flavor. The El Rito chile ripens from green to red and grows to about 4 inches in length. The El Rito chile plants are very productive and grow over 2 feet tall.
