Fresno-(Capsicum annuum)-The Fresno chile was developed for commercial use by Calrence Brown Hamlin in 1952 and was named after the city in North Central California. Today it is grown commercially in neighboring valleys especially the San Joaquin valley. It is similar to the shape and size of a Jalapeno but has thinner walls and grows pointing up. However when it ripens it gets heavier and will start to droop down on the plant. Like the Jalapeno it is used both stuffed and in fresh salsas. It has a nice fruity flavor tone that gets less as the chile ripens to red. The heat range is between 2,000 to 10,000 SHU and it gets hotter as it ripens. The Fresno pepper is about 2 to 3 inches in length and about 1 inch in diameter at its widest point. The Fresno chile is very productive and will produce more if picked frequently. The Fresno Chile Plants grow to about 30 inches tall.
